The 5th Season - Late Summer

Here in the States, and especially Pennsylvania, we are quite familiar with four seasons. Though when consulting TCM and the lunar calendar, a five season model is observed! Late summer is the period of time from mid-August until the fall equinox in late September, and is very much a season of transition. It is when Yang begins to dwindle into more Yin. The mornings and evenings begin to cool off, but the days are still very warm and often humid. As temperature fluctuates, and kiddos go back to school, many find this period of the year particularly stressful as well as taxing to the immune system. We can support the body and mind in a number of ways in preparation for this transition:

  1. Eat for the season! As cool begins to set in, we can start to transition into warmer foods once more. Traditionally, this is when it is time to lean into grains, squash, and root vegetables.

  2. Get plenty of rest! This period of transition can be strenuous in its own right. Excercise is important, but taking a beat to recover and do less intense exercise during this short time period may be more beneficial in the long run. It is very imporanty to prioritize sleep during this time as well.

  3. Come in for acupuncture! If you are feeling like you need a little bit of additional help with achieving proper rest and digestion, acupuncture can certainly assist with this!

Julie Saturdays are Back at Old City

After a summer break from Saturday shifts (where Julie spends quality time with her kids, reading books on the beach, or snuggled up with her puppy Charlie) she is refreshed and ready to take on more patients every other weekend!

Julie’s first official Saturday back is September 26th, and she will follow that cadence of every other weekend until next summer!
